Winton - the town, not house

For the two nights we stayed at Winton we watched an Australian Bush Poet called Melanie Hall (This is the area where Banjo Paterson wrote Waltzing Matilda). On the second night she asked Lauren and I to do a play which needed 4 children. No one else volunteered, so she dragged up Mum and Dad to help. I was the Shearer, Lauren was the red back spider, Mum was the Speeler and Dad was the Sheila. Mel dressed Dad up in a wig, a skirt and a shawl.

As Mel recited the poem, we had to act it out. The story was about a drunk shearer who fell asleep and the Sheila and Speeler were going to take his money. As they were about to steal his money, the red back spider (Lauren) went up behind the Sheila (Dad) and bit him on the bottom! We had lots of laughs and a great time.

The owners off the van park also provide a 3 course dinner each night and a musician before the poet.

Other things we saw in Winton were a green tree frog that lived in our power box – we named him Fred!

Lark Quarry was interesting and unique because you could stand where dinosaurs had walked millions of years ago. It is the only display in the world that shows a dinosaur stampede where the Aussie T-Rex chased a group of smaller dinosaurs for his dinner.

Other bizarre things we saw were the musical fence and Arno’s wall where a man has cemented lots of recycled junk into his wall – eg sewing machine, car wheels, engines and motorbikes.

Everyday now, I am going to put a Joke of the Day up on the Blog and see if you know the answer (put a comment on the blog). I’ll give the answer the next day if nobody gets it.

Today’s Joke of the Day – What’s grey, has big ears and a trunk ?

The Stockman's Hall of Fame

So far on this holiday we have been looking at everything BIG! Today we went to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and saw everything OLD! We saw things to do with horses: saddles, stirrups, whips, boots, spurs, horse shoes and their bridles.

We played with interactive maps which showed where the early explorers went throughout Australia.

We saw how the settlers lived in their wooden homes with no mattresses’ on their beds, a dusty cooking area, rickety chairs and benches to sit on. It was a very difficult life for them and makes me realised how blessed I am.

Communication was also different – old telephones and Morse code.

We watched movies about the history of Stockman, droving, ways of transporting goods (road trains, horse, camels). The people also had to deal with the difficulties of drought, locusts, mice, floods, poor roads and doctors that were far away.

The Hall of Fame was worthwhile as it showed me what life use to be like in Australia.

BIG PLANE, BIG EXCITEMENT

Today after we drove for 2 hours we went to QANTAS Founders Museum. Do you know what QANTAS stands for? Well here is the answer: Q = Queensland, A = and N = Northern, T = Territory, A = Aerial, S= Service. That makes: QANTAS!

We saw a big 747 jumbo and were able to sit in first class at the front of the plane – not the best place to sit in a crash! We also sat in two other planes during our tour. We learned that not even Superman or Bruce Willis could open the escape hatch where the emergency slide comes out. This was the first time I have been in a plane (except for when I was 10 months old going to Tasmania and when I nearly decided I wanted to come out early into the world when I was born!) We saw the cargo hold and had a photo taken as we stood in the jet engine.

In the Museum we saw movies of old planes and how QANTAS began – Pop, you would have loved every minute (no, millisecond) of this place!

After a quick trip to the shops for food, we threw the vortex, had a shower and then set off for dinner.

Tomorrow we are headed to The Stockman’s Hall of Fame.

The Blackstump – but not the restaurant

On Wednesday we went to Tambo teddies – not a lot on display and very expensive! Lauren bought a mouse called Mousey and likes to play with it in the car!

We went to the Wool Scour where I learned that they use to shear sheep and then clean their wool by putting it into a machine. It had blades that looked like forks which got the dirt and oil out of the wool. At the end of the process the wool weighed 40% lighter than before it was cleaned. The tour lady gave us some dirty and clean wool to keep.

Once again, we had a spa. It was nice! I’m thinking of saving up for a spa (although I think we need to employ Mr Simmons to help extend the plumbing from Mitchell to Deep Pool Way so we can have the water from the Artesian Basin).

The Blackstump – not the restaurant I thought it might be. Just a little stump in the middle of Blackall to let me know I am far from home!

Australia Zoo

Yesterday we went to Australia Zoo. We saw really cute kangaroos and elephants, which we hand fed. The elephant we fed was called Bimbo. He was the youngest out of all of them and Bindi Irwin’s favourite. Later on we saw them play in the mud as the elephant keepers sprayed them with the hose – it seemed like they all had fun.

The tigers were a bit funny when they nearly pushed the keeper into the water during a play session. It was amazing to see the keepers and the tigers playing together without the keepers getting eaten alive.

It was cool how I could see the komodo dragon’s neck move when he breathed. I learnt that a full grown komodo dragon could weigh as much as a small car ! Crikey !!!

When it was time to go home / caravan, Lauren insisted on buying a really, really cute toy tiger which she named Stripes.

S.O.S. Dicky

We moved north to the Sunshine Coast today and arrived at Dicky Beach Caravan Park at
noon. It was only 2 hours drive so we had some time to listen to Roald Dahl's Magic Finger
and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

We spent the afternoon playing on the sand on Dicky Beach. Do you know why it is called Dicky Beach? The S.S. Dicky crashed here and this beach is the only one in Australia to be named after a ship wreck!

After building craters in the sand, we came back and had a shower. We then went on a walk - about 4 km and saw so many different types of plants. There are so many different shaped leaves! We walked along the coast line and past many other beaches, including ones just for people to walk their dogs.

On the horizon, we also saw a Cargo ship - I wonder if they were carrying any animals like in "The Wild" Movie?

I have been using my binoculars over the past few days (thanks Mackies) and have seen lots of things up close. I am looking forward to using them more over the next few weeks.

On a personal note, we are now calling Dad, Esau (which means 'Hairy One') as he has not shaved for 2 days, but it looks more like two weeks!

Off to Australia Zoo tomorrow.

Park Fun No. 2

Today we went to the park, not just an ordinary park – the best park I’ve ever been to! It had a pedal monorail where you sit on twin cars and pedal around a track. It also had a basket swing, a gigantic tyre see-saw, a flying fox, all of which was right next to the beach. So when we were finished playing on the equipment, we ran down to the beach and drew pictures.

Sea World

Today we went to Sea World which was only about 2 km from where we are staying. At Sea World we saw Dolphins, Water skiing acts , Polar Bears, Seals, Seal Lions, Sharks, a 4D movie about how to protect our environment, Sting Rays (which I really liked), Starfish, Sea Cucumbers, went into an Aquarium and went on a ride and got really wet!

We spent about 6 ½ hours there, so when we got home we were exhausted! I really want to go there again (maybe when I’m 10 because then I could snorkel in Shark Bay). During the day I enjoyed a Crazy Cone with sprinkles and also popcorn.

The best thing I liked about Sea World was the Dolphins when they jumped up really high and did a forward flip.

To QLD and beyond ....

In the morning we left Nambucca :-( I really love that place. We drove for 400km to the Gold Coast. Along the way we saw the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour and the Big Prawn at Ballina. It was the biggest prawn I've ever seen and even though I love to eat them, I could never eat all of it as I think I would have a big tummy ache. We eventually got to Broadwater Tourist Park in Southport and when we finished setting up the caravan, Lauren and I went on the jumping pillows :-))))) We had a ginormous amount of fun. Check out our photos.

Fishing Tail

After arriving at Nambucca from a long trip, we quickly set-up the caravan and went fishing. We bought some prawns for bait and ran off to the wharf. In the middle of fishing it started to rain :-( Thankfully, it didn't last long and God sent an awesome rainbow which is here in our photos.

I also caught a bream. It wasn't big enough to keep, but was big enough for the Family fishing trophy (sorry Uncle Craig). And no, we didn't use explosives !!!

Park Fun

We left at 5:45 this morning (I wasn't excited to see Dad @ 5:15) and jumped in the car. It was pitch black and I wasn't allowed to do dot to dots until the sun came up - not happy !!!! After a few hours we stopped at McDonalds for breaky. I had a bacon and egg McMuffin, a hash brown and a hot cake. More driving to Bulahdelah were we stopped for a run around and play in the park. We had fun on the equipment - have a look at the photo of me and Lozter hanging around like cheeky monkeys.
